Racing Certifications & Compliance
Section titled “Racing Certifications & Compliance”Standards compliance for IRC, ORC, and One-Design racing.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”We ensure full compliance with World Sailing Equipment Rules and specific rating rule requirements. All racing sails are designed and built to meet the declared specifications.
IRC Certification
Section titled “IRC Certification”Compliance Standards
Section titled “Compliance Standards”| Requirement | Description | Compliance |
|---|---|---|
| Rule 21 | Sail Materials | Full Compliance: All materials used are on World Sailing approved list. |
| Material Declaration | Specific gravity/density check | Data provided for unusual laminates. |
| Measurement | Sail Area Calculation | Per IRC definitions (SPA, HSA, MSA). |
Measurement Process
Section titled “Measurement Process”- Design Phase: Dimensions optimized for rating benefit vs. performance.
- Manufacturing: Built to precise design dimensions (±0.5% tolerance).
- Measurer Verification: Sails delivered “measurement ready” for local IRC measurer.
- Battens: Hard points clearly marked.
- Corners: Measurement points defined.
Documentation: Start-point dimensions provided to client for certificate application.
ORC Certification
Section titled “ORC Certification”ORC Rating Systems (International & Club)
Section titled “ORC Rating Systems (International & Club)”| Requirement | Description | Compliance |
|---|---|---|
| IMS Rule | International Measurement System | Full compliance with IMS geometry definitions. |
| Appendix A | Measurement Inventory | Sail inventory declaration form provided. |
| Aerodynamic Model | Lift/Drag coefficients | Standard shapes align with VPP assumptions. |
Key Measurements (ORC)
Section titled “Key Measurements (ORC)”| Sail | Key Dimensions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mainsail | P, E, MGT, MGU, MGM, MGL | Quoted vs. Measured width checks. |
| Headsail | JL, LPG, J | Luff Perpendicular critical for rating. |
| Spinnaker | SLU, SLE, SFL, SHW | Half-width area calculation. |
Process:
- Sails measured by official measurer.
- Measurement sticker applied.
- Data uploaded to ORC database via national authority.
One-Design Class Rules
Section titled “One-Design Class Rules”Strict adherence to class-specific rules for hull, rig, and sails.
Compliance Levels
Section titled “Compliance Levels”| Level | Description | Example Classes |
|---|---|---|
| Strict One-Design | Builder-supplied or strictly licensed designs. | Laser, J/70 (some), Etchells |
| Box Rule | Must fit within max dimensions; material limits. | TP52, Class 40, IMOCA 60 |
| Development Class | Open design within few constraints. | Mott, 18ft Skiff |
Certification Procedure
Section titled “Certification Procedure”- Royalty Tags: Purchased from class association (if required).
- In-House Measurement: Check against class max/min templates.
- Official Measurement: Sail measured by Class Measurer at regatta or loft.
- Stamp/Button: Official class button or stamp applied to tack.
Our Role:
- We guarantee sails measure in for the class ordered.
- We supply royalty tags if requested (at cost).
- We provide measurement forms filled with build specifications.
World Sailing Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS)
Section titled “World Sailing Equipment Rules of Sailing (ERS)”All sails are defined according to the current ERS 2021-2024 (or applicable version).
Key Definitions
Section titled “Key Definitions”| Term | Definition Standard | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Ply | Sheet of material | Multi-ply allowed in specific classes. |
| Reinforcement | Additional layers at corners | Size limits in some classes. |
| Batten Pocket | Material enclosing batten | Position limits (e.g., leech only). |
| Foot Shelf | Loose foot material | Area inclusion/exclusion. |
Application: We use ERS definitions for all vague or undefined terms in local handicap rules.
